Fair and Balanced Reporting

I, like many Americans living abroad, try to keep up on news back home. My cable television programming has only one true American news channel. That channel is Fox News, which is a 24 hour news channel. Yes, I have CNN access but most of their programming comes out of Hong Kong.

Fox News Corporation prides itself on their motto “Fair and Balanced Reporting” and openly states that they are the only network in the USA that is truly “balanced” in their approach to the news. Well, I have a real problem with that statement.

Over the past 6 months, I have developed a “love-hate” relationship with Fox News. On one side of the relationship, they report much of the local American news in a very responsible manner. But and this is a big but, they are so bias in their political and lifestyle issues reporting. Let me explain.

For those that are living on the far side of the moon, there is a political race for the office of the President of the United States of America. After 8 years of failure by the present government, this race is very important not only to the people of America but the entire world.  Good, honest people are trying to make a decision that may affect the next 8 years of their life. Where do they look for that all important information to make their decision? The news channels…enter Fox News.

There is a core element within the ranks of Fox News that just don’t get it. They truly believe that they are “fair and balance” but they are, in reality, the opposite. Let me run down the list.

Steve Doocy on “Fox & Friends” is the loud, overbearing, and bias member of the early morning team. He has become so overbearing that he doesn’t even allow his co-partners to get a word in edgewise. It has to be HIS thoughts and opinions that get heard. He is so anti-democratic party that he doesn’t even try to cover it up.

Next target is a real easy one: Sean Hannity from the show “Hannity & Colmes.” Now, at least, this show is set-up to be a confrontational show. I can accept that because the “fair and balance” is between the two personalities; Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes. What troubles me is Alan Colmes can’t get a word in edgewise with the overpowering “mouth” of Sean Hannity. Hannity doesn’t even try to hide the fact that he hates anyone that is connected in any level with the Democratic Party. If it ”ain’t” a Republican thought then it “ain’t” worth thinking about. Sean acts like an ass and he is proud of it.

I have saved the worst for last. The absolute worst offender on Fox News is Laura Ingraham. She has worked as a paid consultant, fill-in for Bill O’Reilly, and, now, her own show. She is loud with a capital “L” and she has absolutely NO room for any thoughts other than her own. She doesn’t even have the ability to see the “good” in her opposition. When she is interviewing someone she doesn’t even allow the person the basic respect to respond to the question. She automatically starts to berate the person or the person that is being discussed. I can’t stand to watch her for more than 5 minutes. She is a discredit to the Fox News Group.

Look, I wasn’t born yesterday. I understand that Fox News Corporation is a right wing conservative group and that is reflected in their programming. I don’t have a problem with that as I think that most people in the world have conservative thoughts on many issues. What I can’t stand is attempting to  “smother” in every way possible the opposite side of an issue.

That, my friends, is not “Fair and Balanced Reporting.” I will continue to “balance” my news intake with CNN and BBC News Stations. It is a shame that one has to get “fair and balance” American news from a foreign news service.
