Thoughts
With so much violence in our daily lives (news, movies, crime on the street etc.), we become somewhat numb to the reality of the whole crime thing until it becomes personal.
Today dawned just a regular day for my family. My children returning to school after holiday break, my younger son back playing along with his yaya (nanny), and, of course, my wife doing all the many things that she does for us all.
This morning, I kissed her good-bye as she headed to town to do some errands. Little did I know that today would be different.
My wife went to our local bank to do routine banking things. The bank was very busy as it had been closed during the entire holiday period. My wife was just finishing up with the bank teller (after standing in line over 30 minutes) when a man burst through the main entrance. Right hand in his pocket he told everyone “Don’t anyone move because if you do a lot of people are going to die!” “Don’t try and get me out of here as I am not leaving.” The security guard was taken by surprise as he could not use his weapon for fear of starting a “gun battle” among so many people.
It was quickly apparent that this man was being chased by the police as my wife was able to see four police officers outside the door with rifles raised.
The Bank Manager came forward and tried to talk to the man to calm him down. At first the man reacted in a angry and hostile manner. After some talking the manager got the guy to move towards his office. When the man turned his back my wife and many others ran out the door.
My wife said that she ran so hard that she didn’t even stop to talk to the police. All she wanted to do was put as much space between her and the bank.
We haven’t heard what happen after and there was nothing on the evening news. We guess that means no one was shot.
An incident like this is like a reality check in life. It shows you how you spend most of your life in a bubble. Things can go wrong so quickly.
Tonight the children said a special prayer to God thanking him for allowing their mother to come home. I said a special prayer thanking Him for allowing me to have my wife back so that I can love and appreciate her more.
Sometimes you just don’t know what life is going to send your way.
