America No Longer Global Cop
Opinions
Historically, I believe one of America’s biggest problems has been its propensity to attempt to solve all the problems of the world.
This habit evolved right after World War II when most of the world thought America could do no wrong. History has proven that theory wrong as new countries evolved and geo-politics became more complex.
Today, the problems of the world are highly complex, ever changing and are, usually, based on difficult issues that involve race, cultural and religious differences and economic imbalance.
Yesterday, American President Barack H. Obama addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York City. He stated the obvious – America can not longer be the “global policeman” of the world. Here is an excerpt of his speech:
“Those who used to chastise America for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for America to solve the world’s problems alone,” said Obama in put-up-or-shut-up comments before a packed UN General Assembly hall. “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”
“Nothing is easier than blaming others for our troubles and absolving ourselves of responsibility for our choices and our actions,” he said.
I admire the president for stating the obvious – you can not have it both ways. America will no longer clean up your problems and then allow you to criticize the methods involved. We must work as a global community where we all accept and work towards effective solutions to our common problems.
There will be many critics in the United States that will state that the President is soft and indecisive. These are the same ultra right wingers that get us into wars and then criticize when we get “bogged down” with no effective exit strategy. I like to call this group the “shock and awe” people. They are big on attacking but small on war. If you can’t win the war in 3 days or less, they want to go home. Unfortunately, the world doesn’t that way.
I believe that President Obama is on the right track by making it known that America will no longer be the world’s policeman. It is time that all countries learn to work together for the common good.
